A bit of history… The North Face: the bitterest and most dangerous side of a mountain. This brand was established in 1968 by Douglas and Susie Tompkins, specialising in climbing and ski apparel and equipment. The ‘Half Dome’ logo was inspired by the structure in the Yosemite National Park and, by the 90s, became a fashionable stamp sported by hip-hop artists. Riding the wave of the puffer jacket craze, The North Face pushed their casual wear, releasing a plethora of coloured t-shirts, hoodies and, most importantly, jackets. These colours placed The North Face ahead of brands such as Patagonia and Berghaus, appealing to hip-hip culture that took the bold apparel and made it bolder.

With its first big feature in Wu-Tang’s ‘Method Man’, The North Face was seen on both climbers and rappers during the 90s, reflecting the sportswear trends that permeated the decade. Championed by figures including The Notorious B.I.G., the colourful puffer jacket was iconic and is the perfect item to finish your vintage look.
