A bit of history… In 1980, two Italian designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, met while designing for the same fashion house. Five years later, they founded one of the world’s most celebrated brands and it has only been onwards and upwards ever since. 1985 saw D&G present its first collection, Real Women, at Milan Fashion Week with friends modelling the items, waiting backstage behind a bedsheet as a makeshift curtain. A disappointing reception did not dishearten the pair and it wasn’t long before their breakthrough with their fourth collection, drawing upon Dolce’s Sicilian roots and featuring one of their most iconic items: the Sicilian dress. Introducing a menswear collection in 1992 and their first fragrance, D&G launched itself headfirst into the industry and has never looked back.

One of Dolce and Gabbana’s defining moments, bringing it to the global market’s attention, came when Madonna wore an encrusted corset and jacket at the 1991 premier of Truth or Dare: In Bed with Madonna. Resulting in a subsequent partnership with the pop icon, D&G proceeded to design over 1500 costume for Madonna’s international tour, Girlie Show. Furthermore, the company has had its foot in the film industry door for years, designing costumes for Romeo + Juliet and making its own short films with stars such as Emilia Clarke and Matthew McCaughey.
