A bit of history… This American apparel store was founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, focussing on the production of outdoor wear. Highlighted by its mountainous logo, a silhouette of Mount Fitz Roy, Chouinard began by selling climbing pitons in his parent’s back garden. In 1965 he went into partnership with a fellow climber and engineer, Tom Frost, and together they redesigned the tools sold, becoming the largest U.S. supplier of climbing gear by 1970. Clothing for climbers, at this point, largely consisted of grey and mundane apparel. On a trip to Scotland, Chouinard wore a striped rugby shirt while climbing and, upon bring it back to the U.S., began a hugely profitable trend. As the clothing line expanded, it was dubbed ‘Patagonia’, as a tribute to the mountainous outdoors, and explored various materials and styles. Since then, Patagonia has been well worn by both climbers and regular consumers.

Worn by figures from Shia Labeouf to Kendall Jenner, the Patagonia style is one appreciated from both ends of the fashion industry. The 90s saw a surge in popularity as Winona Ryder amongst others brought the fleece into fashion and activewear has not since gone out of fashion, still seen paired with jeans, crop tops and a pair of Dr. Martens.
