A bit of history… Established in 1952 by René Ramillon, the Italian apparel company is named after an Alpine town, Monestier-de-Clermont, abbreviated to Moncler. Initially making quilted sleeping bags and tents, designing robust structures for mountain holidays, Moncler is now chiefly famous for its down jacket, or puffer. Created for the protection of mountain workers, the jackets were noticed by Lionel Terray who collaborated with the brand to create a range of jackets, gloves and outdoor gear to resist the intense climates. Between then and the 1980s, Moncler supplied various expeditions before being recognised by Paris creatives as an innovative fashion statement. The down jacket was revamped by Parisian designer, Chantal Thomass, adding buttons, a fur trim and reversible fabrics and still remains an iconic piece.
Moncler is a brand that is hugely popular with celebrities; wearing it in their day to day lives are figures including Tom Hiddleston, Reese Witherspoon and Emma Stone to name a handful. Memorably, Drake sports a red down jacket in Hotline bling, doubling sales, while Will Smith featured in their 2019 ‘Genius is Born Crazy’ campaign.
