A bit of history… The luxury label was first founded in Florence, in 1921, by Guccio Gucci and remains the highest-selling Italian brand. Initially specialising in leather goods, the young Guccio Gucci had seen the quality of luggage owned in the Savoy hotel, in London, while working as a porter, and, upon his return home, established a store in 1920 selling fine leather made by accomplished artisans. Expanding to include shop locations in Milan and Rome, Gucci began to offer a wider range of products, including the iconic Gucci loafer, that were embellished with the familiar double-G symbol or the crest. The 90s saw a reintroduction of the loafer, in multiple colours, alongside a new sex appeal in the women’s collection, led by Tom Ford. Sleek slip dresses, stylish suits and stilettos went alongside provocative advertising, most memorably the shot of Carmen Kass with a G shaved into her pubic hair, by Mario Testino.
Gucci has always inspired glamour, something that celebrities have always desired. Famously, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Seller were fans of Gucci totes, while Jackie Kennedy had her own favourite, which was, in time, renamed ‘The Jackie’. With Kate Moss on their runway and Matt Dillon walking around in their loafers, Gucci was at the apex of the industry in the 90s. Today, we see Gucci in films, such as Rocket Man and Wolf of Wall Street, or promoting their latest fragrance with TV adverts, including the glorious montage with Dakota Johnson swimming in flowers for Bloom.
