A bit of history… Founded in 1889, the Kansas-based brand, predominantly producing denim jeans, was formed by Henry David Lee and was originally known as the HD Lee Mercantile Company. Initially famous for their jackets and dungarees, Lee saw a surge of popularity in the 1920s after releasing a range of overalls and worker jumpsuits. Twenty years later, they were the leading manufacturer of work garments in the U.S. with many sporting the recognisable 1944 ‘Lazy ‘S” back pocket design. In 1954, Lee expanded with a range of casual wear and in the 70s this became a greater focus of the company, entering into the fashion industry more permanently. The Ms. Lee collection for women was released not long after, encouraging men and women with their new and now famous 1982 tagline: ‘The Brand that Fits.’
Since its expansion from worker wear, Lee has launched multiple campaigns that have attracted all. Featured on the cover of the Rolling Stone, modelled by Bruce Springsteen in 1984, and seeking collaborations with Wal-Mart and K-Mart with their tributary brand ‘Riders’, Lee marketed itself as a brand that was accessible for all. Notably, Lee National Denim Day in 1996 was a large campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer research. This has become a rewarding annual tradition where companies are encouraged to have a day for employees to go casual for a cause in exchange for a donation with ambassadors including Pierce Brosnan and Christina Applegate.
