A bit of history… Initially renowned for its trainers, Air Jordan products first came to the market with the Air Jordan I, designed by Peter C. Moore, made for Michael Jordan in 1984. Jordan took to the court in the red and black shoes, what he dubbed ‘devil colours’, breaking the league 51 percent rule and resulting in a trainer ban. Rather than a triumph for the NBA, the ban encouraged a subsequent marketing campaign, by Nike, promoting the illegal shoes and the Air Jordan line was born. Over the years, the brand has followed its namesake’s upward trajectory and remains one of the top selling streetwear brands.
Air Jordan has not only been associated with basketball, but has sponsored teams and athletes from a variety of sports, including baseball, motorsports and American football, becoming the exclusive equipment provider for the University of Michigan football team in 2016. Moreover, its reach has expanded beyond the athletic communities, collaborating with popular music artists, such as Travis Scott, Eminem and Drake, but also designer brands including Supreme and Off White.
