Predominantly, our Starter collection consists of 1990s sportswear, including vintage jackets and windbreakers as well as sweatshirts in various block colours. A bit of history… Starter was founded in 1971 by David Berckerman, specialising in sportswear with a focus on throwback pieces from various major sports teams. As it specifies, Starter pioneered the athleisure trend, uniting sportswear with popular culture through partnerships with national leagues, including the NBA and NFL. Their most iconic item, the Starter pullover breakaway jacket, became a wardrobe staple for the 90s youth, resembling coach parka jackets. Moreover, Starter was renowned for innovative accessory design. Recognising that kids were wearing their caps backwards, Starter placed their logo on the rear-end of the hat, taking the spotlight at the centre of the forehead and inspiring consumers to ‘look for the star’.
Worn by The Fresh Prince of Bel Air star Will Smith and DJ Jazzy in the 1993 hat advert, Starter was championed by 90s popular culture. Starring athletes and actors side by side, including Cecil Fielder of the Detroit Tigers, Cam Neely of the Pittsburgh Penguins as well as Corbin Bernsen and Brooke Shields, in the 1992 commercial, Starter promoted itself as a brand for all members of society.
