A bit of history… The 1980s witnessed the rise of the Paninaro in Milan, Italy and, as a result, a new kind of youth subculture and consumerist mentality was born. This young group adopted brands such as Best Company, Stone Island and Moncler and labels including Wild Boys and Paninaro, inspiring famous songs by Duran Duran and the Pet Shop Boys respectively. Best Company rode the wave of this new movement of casuals, introducing its ‘bold-is-better’ products into the growing market. Vibrant colours with large spell out logos matched with bold gilets and Timberland boots created a look that defined the 80s and Best Company led the way with figures like Olmes Carretti at the healm.
Milan took the full force of the technicolour campaigns launched by Best Company, with magazines featuring caricatures of the Paninaro on the beach, riding mopeds and eating hamburgers. Going beyond Italy and making its way west, this cultural shift revolutionised 80s style.
